about
Somebody just wouldn’t stop talking. So I closed my eyes and imagined a desert at night. The next day, I picked up my guitar to play what I saw. Two years later, or was it three, I attended a reading by the poet Alice Notley at a bookstore on Avenue B. “Make your mind a desert,” she said. But recently, when someone asked what the song was about, I had no answer. “It’s about a walk from the east side of Manhattan to the west,” I told him.
lyrics
I pause in the east, for a glimpse of the sea,
I’ve come to remember
The sound of your footsteps
Figures of gray on the skin of the waves,
Flicker and bend towards the end of the day
Dark in a flash
In your eyes
Was a taste
For a night to behold
A flight to unfold
The name of the song
You took home on your tongue
In the sunlight thins
Off on the breeze
To the desert and back
For the pleasure of sand
Running out of your hands
The name of the song
You took home on your tongue
In the sunlight thins,
The morning gathers in
A casual spin through a maze of g(u)ilt
Savoring fruits of seeds never sown
An unbroken gaze at your faded quilt
All of your jewels must have been brilliant
Dark in a flash
In your eyes
Was a taste
For a night to behold
A flight to unfold
The name of the song
You took home on your tongue
In the sunlight thins
Off on the breeze
To the desert and back
For the pleasure of sand
Running out of your hands
I caught up with you
At the river’s edge
Thirsting for exile in seasons of gold
Following clouds to the other shore
Maddening red, a crimson escape
Gone in a flash
In your eyes
Was a taste
For a night to behold
A flight to unfold
The name of the song
You took home on your tongue
In the sunlight thins
Off on the breeze
To the desert and back
For the pleasure of sand
Running out of your hands
The name of the song
You took home on your tongue
Fluttered off on the wind,
The morning gathers in
